Fall 2012 Bridal Season

Extra

Following the Spring/Summer 2012 catwalk collections, the bridal season launched its autumn 2012 lines last week in New York.

While the Kate Middleton effect on retail continues with UK high street and designer purchases by the Duchess of Cambridge rapidly selling out, the directional effect of the royal wedding dress failed to make an impact on bridal lines.

Vera Wang bucked the princess bride trend, showing a collection of black, tiered wedding dresses, while designers including Marchesa, Carolina Herrera and Nicole Miller all showed short dresses with hemlines reaching the knee. The Duchess’ sister Pippa Middleton’s royal wedding look offered more inspiration for the autumn 2012 bridal looks, with silk-covered buttons, delicately beaded cap sleeves and sweetheart necklines adding femininity to simple designs.

Echoing S/S 2012 RTW collections, the shoulder was the key point of interest for bridalwear. Strapless styles continued to be on trend while sheer, embellished tulle overlays and asymmetric necklines provided additional detail.

The Art Deco era of the 1920s was also channeled by bridal designers for the season as drop waists, applique headbands and flapper-style beading achieved a sense of vintage glamour at Reem Acra, Badgley Mischka and Temperley London.

New York International Bridal Week ran from October 15 to 17.
