David Bowie: Style Inspiration

British music icon David Bowie is set to inspire a new generation of creatives with the Victoria and Albert Museum’s forthcoming David Bowie Is exhibition, opening in March 2013.

The exhibition will explore Bowie’s cultural significance by showcasing original costumes, fashion, photography, film, music videos and set designs from a career spanning 40 years.

The fashion industry is already embracing Bowie’s image across editorial and the Spring/Summer 2013 menswear collections – just two months after the retrospective was announced.

Max Pearmain, the London-based editor of menswear magazine Arena Homme +, has made Bowie the subject of the magazine’s Autumn/Winter 2012 issue, bringing his look into directional styling editorials. Similarly, British designer Jonathan Saunders cited Bowie as the key inspiration behind his S/S 2013 menswear collection. The designer reinterpreted Bowie’s strong shoulder and monochrome pinstripes through stylised yet wearable pieces.

A new wave of Bowie followers is likely to continue into the A/W 2013-14 menswear season, showing in January.
