NYFW A/W 15-16: Gothic Grooming

Victoria Beckham, Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Rodebjer

Gothic hair and make-up offer a key styling direction from New York Fashion Week. Ghostly pallid skin is accentuated with soft red, purple and brown tones on lips and around the eyes, while hair is worn with gothic severity. This seasonal look is a move on from the gothic styling seen at Couture Autumn/Winter 2014-15.

  • Alexander Wang’s gothic punk collection showcased strong hair and make-up styling, setting the precedent for the ghostly looks to come. Hair was inspired by alternative rock icon Marilyn Manson, with stylist Guido Palau creating oily strands with Redken’s Diamond Oil Shine Airy Mist, stringing them across pallid, colourless faces.

  • Palau’s severe topknot for Marc Jacobs exaggerated elongated necks – creating a sophisticated look inspired at its base by fashion icon Diana Vreeland, but with the tough appeal of urban fashion warriors. French make-up artist Francoise Nars created a matt eggplant lip with defined eyebrows to complement the gothic, but sophisticated severity.

  • Natural looks were updated at Victoria Beckham and Rodebjer, with subtle blackening around the eye – using matt black kohl with red, taupe, and eggplant powder colours. This heightens the ghostly, sleepless-night appeal that we expect to see filter down for the A/W 15-16 season.
