Microwaveable Espresso Maker
German product design company Gemodo Coffee and German-based design studio Lunar Europe have created a compact, microwaveable espresso maker. The Piamo, a single-serve espresso maker with an integrated cup, can brew a fresh cup of espresso in 30 seconds using an espresso pad or coffee granules.
The set comes with a cup, water chamber, filter inlay and filter cap, which all fit together. Users simply add water and coffee, snap the water chamber and filters together, and place the unit in a microwave. As the cup heats up, it creates pressure that forces the water through the coffee in the filter to create a shot of espresso.
The product is currently featured on German crowdfunding website Startnext, where customers can pledge between €40 ($50) and €145 ($190) to be one of the first to receive the device if the company reaches its minimum funding target of €145,000.
Approximately 400 million cups of coffee are consumed every day across the US, with more than 50% of American adults drinking the beverage every day. Consumers are keen to invest in products that create quality food and drink at home (see Professional Performance: Five-Star Kitchen Appliances), and brands like coffee giant Starbucks are feeding the demand by introducing innovative products like the Verismo Coffee Machine.
