Hygiene Kits: Airlines’ New Amenity

As we outline in Airlines + Covid-19, cleaning practices will become a key brand differentiator for air carriers post-pandemic. Hong Kong label company Formia, which designs white-label products with airlines, brings this focus to in-flight amenities with a hygiene kit to ensure all passengers are protected.

The concept kit upgrades previous branded airline swag, such as socks and earplugs, for products that address the anxieties of post-pandemic travellers, like face masks and sanitising wipes. The items come in a plastic pouch emblazoned with in-flight personal hygiene tips, such as washing your hands, avoiding handshakes and staying well-hydrated. Airlines could upgrade the kit’s contents depending on cabin. A business-class passenger might get a cotton face mask and hand sanitiser, as opposed to an EVA foam mask and one-off sanitising wipe for economy passengers.

While these kits could become a surface for touch transmission of Covid-19, they underline hygiene’s importance for the future of airline branding. Having an eye mask for a good night’s sleep and socks for comfort are no longer passengers’ primary concerns. Instead, airlines will need to attend to worries about clean surfaces and public health. These kits would give them a way to do so.

But don’t expect them to appear on your seat anytime soon. Airlines have drastically reimagined in-flight protocols, stopping meal services and removing pillows and blankets. Stretched budgets and increasingly thin margins mean that it’s unlikely new amenities will be introduced anytime soon. Nevertheless, it’s likely that hygiene concerns will linger long after the immediate pandemic threat recedes, making such kits a future essential.
