LFW S/S 2012: Seaside Chic

The ‘staycation’ associated with the recent economic downturn has clearly influenced designers showing their Spring/Summer 2012 collections at London Fashion Week, with a nostalgic British seaside aesthetic seen at numerous shows over the weekend.

Shoe designer Charlotte Olympia presented her S/S 2012 Sirens collection in a seaside-themed presentation with a 1920s air. Glamorous models lounged on steamers while wearing Olympia’s seashell-encrusted creations.

Emma Hill’s collection for Mulberry S/S 2012 was wholly inspired by the much-loved British seaside. Waterproof anoraks were teamed with romantic maxi skirts and sporty drawstring shorts for a 1970s seaside feel. Ice cream vans and free sticks of traditional rock added to the sense of nostalgic charm. Daks also used traditional British seaside towns as inspiration for its preppy S/S 2012 collection. In true British style, tailored shorts and sundresses in crisp white, navy and checked cotton were practically teamed with anoraks and weatherproof cover-ups.

London Fashion Week runs until September 21 2011.
