Repair Your Own Canvas Shoes

Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Eugenia Morpurgo has designed a pair of canvas shoes that come with their own Repair It Yourself (RIY) kit, allowing owners to mend and patch their shoes as they wear and tear.

Italian-born Morpurgo developed the idea for the repairable classic canvas plimsolls to increase sustainability and durability. It also enables wearers to personalise their shoes for a unique twist. Unlike conventional shoes, where the soles are fixed to the uppers with glue or stitching, RIY soles have a reversible, unfixed connection, thus facilitating repairs.

Morpurgo designed RIY shoes in order to put the knowledge and tools for repair back in the hands of the consumer. Inspired by sustainability and ecology, her previous projects have included creating natural dyes and handmade eco sandals in Rwanda.
