In-Home Keyless Delivery: Amazon’s New Incentives


In-home delivery – where packages are dropped inside the home rather than on the doorstep – is likely to see rapid growth in the US following Amazon’s decision to extend its ‘smart entry’ concept nationwide to all its customers.

Amazon has also added in-car delivery in 37 US cities this spring for customers with Chevy, Buick, GMC, Cadillac or Volvo vehicles purchased since 2015.

While the full in-home delivery service remains limited to Amazon Prime members in 37 cities and surrounding areas, the broader Amazon Key features are now available to everyone. As in-home delivery is extended to other cities, the incentives for take-up of Amazon Prime will grow. Already, more than 100 million people, representing more than 65% of US households, subscribe to Prime, Amazon confirmed in April.

Amazon Key was first launched in October 2017. For $289.98 (currently discounted for a limited period to $169.99 to encourage take-up), the  Amazon Key Home Kit includes one of eight smart door locks that can be activated remotely, an Amazon Cloud Cam security camera, and access to the Amazon Key app to view live footage of the customer’s door.

While in-home delivery has stirred controversy in American media, with claims that privacy-conscious customers feel uncomfortable with the idea, retailers are growing in confidence that the service will catch on. Last September, Walmart began testing a new service in the Silicon Valley area, allowing customers with August smart home devices to have packages delivered inside their homes. Online grocery orders are even placed inside the fridge and freezer, when appropriate.

By using smart home devices, the Walmart customer can see the entire delivery process from start to finish, beginning with a notification sent to the customer’s mobile device. The Walmart deliveries are being handled by Californian service Deliv, whose drivers use a one-time passcode to enter the customer’s home with the package or grocery order.
