Iofit: Smart Coaching Footwear

Iofit, a smart shoe that provides coaching to improve workouts or golf swings, will be unveiled at this year's Mobile World Congress tech event.

Built-in pressure sensors and accelerometers will detect foot positioning and posture, and deliver feedback and analysis using a mobile app. The app will be able to provide real-time audible coaching (instructing weight lifters to shift their stance, for instance), as well as record movement data for later analysis and comparison.

Salted Venture, a South Korea-based spinoff from Samsung's Creative Lab, developed the wearable technology. The company is currently looking to partner with existing footwear and athletics companies.

A number of smart footwear products have already come to market – Stylus covered Digitsole in late 2014. However, Iofit's coaching element looks set to provide more nuanced and useful data for amateur athletes and fitness enthusiasts. The best wearable tech innovators are realising the need to make data meaningful, rather than just tracking it.

Salted Venture plans to retail two models of the shoe: a fitness version, costing an estimated $199, and a golfing version for $259. A crowdfunding campaign is expected to launch in summer 2016.

Mobile World Congress runs from February 22-25 in Barcelona – watch out for more coverage, coming soon. Meanwhile, look to our reporting from International CES 2016 for the latest trends in consumer electronics.
