Mac x Guo Pei: Channelling Met Ball Beauty

MAC x Guo Pei

US fashion colour cosmetics brand Mac has collaborated with Chinese couturier Guo Pei on a capsule make-up line celebrating the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new large-scale exhibition, China: Through the Looking Glass.

Pei, who designed the show-stopping yellow gown worn by pop star Rihanna at the museum’s Met Gala in New York last week, also designed five custom dresses as inspiration for the line – which form part of the Met’s exhibition.

The range of 16 cosmetics, launching October 2015, includes eye shadows, eyeliner, blush, powder, lipstick and gloss, and boasts exotic, floral packaging luxuriated with gold finishes. Despite China’s love of red (a culturally lucky colour), Pei instead chose a highly pigmented azure blue (the colour of the soul, according to the designer) as the collection’s key shade, with accompanying corals and nudes.

With the spotlight currently on China’s influence on Western fashion, we expect to see key colours, products and cosmetic styling from the country infiltrate the beauty market over the coming year.
