Interactive Christmas Tree

In Japan, digital art collective TeamLab welcome the magic and wonder of Christmas with The Crystal Tree, an interactive Christmas tree that viewers can decorate using their smartphones.

The tree is a giant hanging prism of LED lights currently centred in the Canal City shopping and entertainment complex in Fukuoka, Japan. Viewers can adorn the tree using the site-specific Canal Mirai Christmas app, which features a range of glimmering ornaments and colourful animated light displays to choose from. Effects include ribbons of light, twinkling star effects and a wind effect that causes the tree to look like it’s swaying. The seasonal display draws in crowds and generates social media buzz as people gather in the mall to share the enchanting retail experience.
