Rudi Gernreich Label to Relaunch

The popularity of brand revivals continues with the news that American designer Rudi Gernreich’s brand is to be relaunched more than 25 years after his death. Famous for the first topless swimsuit, as modelled by his now iconic muse Peggy Moffiitt, Gernreich also designed unisex jumpsuits and is strongly associated with the Sixties fashion scene.

An unidentified German entrepreneur is reportedly behind the relaunch. The revitalised Gernreich trademark will be based in New York and the hunt is on for a worthy design team. Securing worldwide trademark rights and hoping to present a runway collection in 2014, will the infamous monokini be reworked for a 21st-century audience?

Gernriech’s original designs are currently on display in The Total Look: The Creative Collaboration Between Rudi Gernreich, Peggy Moffitt and William Claxton. The exhibition at the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Museum of Art, Georgia, runs until October 7 2012.
