The Sunn Light

Sunn Light

Designed in California, Sunn is a smart LED light that mimics the changing brightness of the sun wherever you are. In response to our increasingly urban and indoor lifestyles, it aims to attune the user to nature's rhythms for a more organic approach to lighting.

The light can be used as an alarm in the morning to gently wake the user with a warming, sunrise-like experience, which then changes to a bright white light during the day to foster concentration and productivity. At sunset, it fades to the 'firelight' setting for a relaxing glow that helps prepare the user for sleep. During the night, the user can activate the 'moonlight' setting by shaking their smartphone – this soft light allows enough illumination for them to see in the dark without severely disrupting their sleep.

As well as tracking the sun in the user's location, the accompanying Sunn app can be used to select a different location or time of day for the light, depending on the user's preferences. This can be programmed to help ease jetlag or winter blues in regions with prolonged periods of darkness, for example. The app can also be used to control other smart lighting systems, such as Philips' Hue or Lifx, spreading the health benefits of the Sunn light concept throughout the home.

Products that promote wellness are becoming increasingly popular as consumers yearn for a more contemplative and reflective lifestyle – look to our coverage of Design Academy Eindhoven's graduate show earlier this year for more examples.
