Smart Travel: Reisplanner Xtra App

Dutch national rail operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) has launched a new mobile service that provides commuters with real-time updates about congestion levels on the train they intend to catch.

The new service is now available on Reisplanner Xtra, a travel planner app that uses current location information from its users to suggest the most appropriate travel routes at any given time. The new feature has been added to display congestion levels on NS trains, and is currently being trialled on 11 trains operating between Zwolle and Roosendale in the Netherlands.

The information is displayed in an easy-to-understand graphical format: one doll figure means the train is quiet, two means busy and three means crowded. The operator hopes the service will allow users to make informed decisions about their journeys ahead of time, and alleviate overcrowding as customers take steps to avoid busy routes.

The new launch follows hot on the heels of Moovit, an app that leverages user locations to calculate journey times and overcrowding levels in a city’s transport system. To discover more digital travel services, see Travel Websites & Apps
