New Aesop Store, Tokyo

Botanical cosmetics specialist Aesop’s new store in Aoyama, Tokyo, is a lesson in pared-down retail design. Jo Nagasaka of Japanese architectural agency Sschemata was tasked with the challenge of renovating the building – which formerly housed a produce store – into a modern retail space.

Nagasaka used the skeleton of the original produce store, recycling materials and fixtures to form display stands, shelves, door handles, mirrors and testing stations. Fused with Aesop’s simplistic modern branding and packaging, the finished design delivers a contemporary apothecary with rustic flair.
