Augmented Gallery Visits

The Fine Arts Museum in Lyon, France and the National Gallery in London, UK have both enlisted modern media artists to enhance works from their collections.

The Fine Arts Museum asked digital artist Arnaud Pottier to bring some of its marble sculptures to life with projection mapping. The technique is used to turn irregularly shaped surfaces into display screens. In this case, Pottier's projections add facial movement and expression to the static sculptures and enhance the experience of their dynamic composition by suggesting animation.

Meanwhile, the National Gallery's exhibition Soundscapes invited six sound and music artists – Nico Muhly, Chris Watson, Susan Philipsz, Gabriel Yared, Jamie xx, and Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller – to compose a track in response to a National Gallery painting of their choosing. Visitors to the exhibition take in these conversations by stepping into individual exhibition rooms, letting each work pairing resonate on its own.

The audio pieces can only be heard in the gallery space during the exhibition's run. Unavailable for streaming or download online, Soundscapes is a multimedia experience that cannot be recreated once the visitor has walked away.

The way both projects layer or pair artworks in a unique physical setting is on trend with audiences' growing desire for ephemeral, one-off experiences.
