Foster + Partners: The Eva Light
British architecture firm Foster + Partners has produced Eva – a floating cone of light that emits a warm glow similar to candlelight. The tabletop lamp was created in collaboration with Italian manufacturer Lumina.
The lamp is housed in a glass tube. A round, mechanised aluminium base conceals an LED light that projects upwards onto a reflective cone. This is held flush with the top of the tube by a seamless mitred joint in the glass. The light passes through two lenses – a flat holographic lens and a larger conical one that mirrors the form of the reflector above. At eye level, the light source is invisible, and the reflector appears to float.
The piece was inspired by a lighting solution for a previous architectural project by the firm, which called for a lamp with the ability to softly illuminate a large dining table.
