Joe Hamilton: Trouble in Utopia

In Trouble in Utopia, Melbourne-based artist Joe Hamilton abstracts an industrial cityscape into a moving video mosaic. Colours and angles of brutalist buildings shift around in disorientating frames to recreate the experience of exploring a landscape. The kaleidoscopic views are accompanied by a diegetic sound recording that amplifies the illusory quality of the video.

His digital films often address issues of space and surroundings within the urban landscape. This fascination with illusions and our perception of the world is further explored in our Play of Light colour concept for Spring/Summer 2015. Hamilton’s work reflects the theme’s dark directional palette in chromatic hues of Twilight Blue, Lumina Grey and Lunar Rock.
