At the entrance to the Cooper-Hewitt’s latest installation for their ongoing series entitled Design With the Other 90%: Cities, one statistic in particular captures the sheer magnitude of our current population crisis: “For the first time in history, the majority of the earth's approximately 7 billion inhabitants live in cities. Close to one billion people live in informal settlements, commonly known as slums or squatter settlements, and that number is projected to swell to two billion by 2030.” With the number of people living in poverty projected to double over the next two decades, it is no wonder that design innovation for survival—not for business, not for profit—lies at the heart of every project on show.
