L’Oréal Launches 100% Vegan Hair Dye
L’Oréal Professionnel is revolutionising the natural haircare sector with the launch of a 100% vegan hair-dye product called Botanea in May 2018.
Designed for salon use, the range consists of powdered henna, indigo and cassia derived from pure plant extracts sustainably sourced in India. Stylists simply mix the powders with water to create the dye, which can produce a range of warm and cool tones – a first for natural hair dyes. It can also be used for highlighting.
The trio of powders can be mixed at varied concentrations to create a range of shades from light blonde to dark brown, and water temperature can also be used to manipulate the dye. L’Oreal claims Botanea is less harsh on the hair and scalp than conventional colourants, and the coconut oil coating soothes the typically uncomfortable application process.
Botanea cleverly taps into rapidly rising consumer demand for vegan products (vegan food product labelling grew by 92% between 2014 and 2016 in Australia – Mintel, 2017). Vegan beauty forms part of the growing global natural and organic beauty market, which is forecast to reach $22bn by 2024. Haircare will become the second largest contributor to this industry (Persistence Market Research, 2016).
L’Oreal Professionnel will simultaneously launch a vegan haircare line for salon use called Source Essentielle, comprising a shampoo, balm and oil for both natural and coloured hair.
