Vans’ Custom Culture Collection

US street and skate brand Vans has launched its annual Custom Culture Contest. American designer Peter Som, Twilight actress Kristen Stewart and US comedian and TV host Conan O’Brien have all been invited to design personalised pairs of classic slip-on Vans to promote the design project.

The Custom Culture Contest launched on February 1 2012, offering American high-school students the opportunity to customise a pair of Vans with the chance of winning $50,000 (£31,500) for their school’s art programme. Art teachers can register their school for participation in the project online. The first 1,000 schools to sign up will each be sent four pairs of plain Vans shoes to customise for the contest.

Submissions will be judged in March. Vans staff will narrow the entries down to 50, which will then be posted online for the public to vote for five finalists. A panel of judges will choose the winning entry at an event in Los Angeles in May.
