Relaxation Ice Cream

US brand Bebida Beverage, the manufacturer of Koma Unwind – a relaxation drink for consumers who have difficulty sleeping or suffer from anxiety or stress – is developing a functional ice cream that has the same effect.

The relaxation ice cream contains melatonin, valerian root, milk thistle and rose hip – the same botanicals used in the drink – and will be marketed as a dietary supplement. The company has been testing the product in vanilla and chocolate flavours, with positive results.

"People have been mixing ice cream and caffeinated soft drinks since the turn of the 19th century. And I've learned that a lot of people are consuming our relaxation drink with ice cream on top as a float," said Bebida chief executive Brian Weber. "It's a functional product and will have a premium price... We're not going to become the next Ben & Jerry."

The company hopes to roll out the product in January 2014.

This is the latest in a long line of 'unhealthy' foods being given a healthier, functional makeover. For further examples of the latest 'unjunked' and functional foods, see Next-Gen Functional Food – part of our Future of Food Industry Trend.
