EasyHotel to Enter African Market
Budget hotel chain EasyHotel has announced plans to open 50 properties across Africa in the next five years.
The hotel chain will initially focus on destinations served by the EasyJet airline. However, the group has not yet announced any specific locations.
EasyHotel currently operates 15 properties in cities throughout Europe and the Middle East, but it is unlikely that the developing nations will welcome the hotel chain. Cheap accommodation can create the wrong type of tourism, often pushing up the price of property and produce for locals, without generating any substantial economic development for the area. This has certainly been the case in parts of Spain.
In terms of corporate governance, it would be prudent for EasyHotel to ensure that building hotels facilitates the provision of basic amenities such as clean running water to local communities, in the way that Wilderness Safaris has.
