Muji & Airbnb Launch Home Essentials Collection

Airbnb x Muji

As consumers become more comfortable travelling during the pandemic, Airbnb and Japanese retail company Muji have launched a home essentials set ranging from kitchenware to bathroom necessities – a one-stop solution for those interested in hosting guests and making some extra money.

The June 2021 Airbnb Host Essentials by Muji launch is a 23-piece collection for travel hosts, curated with affordability and design in mind. Among American travellers, 68% value thoughtful and unique amenities in an Airbnb experience. High-quality towels, clothing hangers, coffee mugs, table settings and glassware are the top five desired items (Airbnb, 2021). In addition to these essentials, the set also has a modular cleaning system with a dustpan, broom and lint roller, appealing to today’s hygiene-conscious travellers.

As we explored in Wellness at Home: Pivotal Product Opportunities, scent plays a significant role in creating a homely atmosphere. Acknowledging this, Muji and Airbnb have also included an aroma diffuser in the kit. A nod to the decluttered home of the contemporary consumer who wants to be optimised for work, rest and play, this collaboration embraces Muji’s minimalist and versatile aesthetic with its all-white products. The collection is designed to accommodate two guests and costs $400.

As we discuss in Decoded Future 2020: Four Post-Pandemic Consumer Concerns, the pandemic has encouraged cash-strapped consumers to turn to minimalist lifestyles. A convenient way to prepare the home, this clever partnership converging retail and hospitality could support those looking to earn some extra income in the pandemic’s financial aftermath.

With its practical and uncomplicated design, this collaboration has in mind both the budget-conscious homeowner and the 2021 consumer who prioritises meaningful and safe travel experiences.
