Kering Creates Snakeskin Trade Alliance


Luxury French holdings company Kering, formerly known as PPR, is creating a Python Conservation Partnership that aims to make the sourcing of snakeskin for luxury goods a more sustainable process.

The use of python skin by luxury brands is increasing, as designers can market and price goods made from the skin at substantially higher prices than those made from leather or canvas, reaching customers at the very top of the luxury market. As yet, there are few to zero governing bodies in place to monitor the trade of exotic skins, so the announcement looks set to make python a more sustainable exotic skin.

Kering, the owner of luxury Italian fashion house Gucci, is aligning with the International Trade Centre (a partner agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organisation) and other non-government organisations. They will look into the animal welfare standards and sustainability of the snakeskin trade over three years.

Currently, numerous problems arise when buying skins for the fashion industry due to the lack of monitoring. This new research programme aims to tackle some of the key concerns when it comes to the trade of skins. These include improving the breeding of captive animals, paying closer attention to the welfare of workers involved in the trade, and producing technology that can differentiate between captive and wild skins.
