Dalila Gonçalves: Kneaded Memory

Portuguese artist Dalila Gonçalves’ Kneaded Memory combines large rocks with traditional Portuguese tile patterns in semi-saturated and rich, mid-tone hues.

Drawing inspiration from azulejos tile work – a form of glazed ceramic tile popular in both Portugal and Spain – Gonçalves created tiles that follow the rocks’ contours, merging naturally occurring forms, hues and textures with hand-crafted designs to create a unique overall surface finish.

The outdoor installation in Blankenberge, Belgium is on show until September 30 2012 as part of Beaufort04, the fourth triennial showcasing contemporary art by the sea.
