New Products Cater to On-the-Go Pets

New products for owners who regard their pets as truly constant companions proliferated at Global Pet Expo in Orlando (find our full event report here). As more pet parents bring their animals with them out into the world, brands are launching dog- and cat-friendly accessories to ease the journey.

  • Protection From the Elements: For wintertime adventurers, the Stowe base layer from Massachusetts-based Kurgo is a polyester/spandex outfit for dogs that can be worn alone or layered under a jacket for added warmth – an adjustable collar protects the dog’s neck from the cold. For summer, Finnish dog-accessory brand Paikka showed its UV & Bug Shirt, which blocks UV rays and features a zebra print, a pattern believed to repel insects
  • Meals on the Move: While sports bar-style treats are not new, new brand Nobl from Canada-based Guardian Pet Food says its nutrient-rich bars – available in vegan and meat-based versions – serve as a complete on-the-go meal for dogs. Maryland-based Brutus Broth, which makes fortified bone broth for dogs, introduced a powdered version called Brutus on the Go. It’s formulated in easy-to-carry sticks that can be mixed into water. “Dog owners want to take their dogs with them everywhere [and] provide the best for them when they are on the road,” explains co-founder Kim Hehir.
  • First-Class Carriers: A hard-shell pet backpack from Canadian brand Instachew includes a ventilation system with an in-built temperature sensor that automatically controls air flow. A brown-tinted window lets pets see out while reducing external stimuli. NYC’s Your Cat Backpack added two backpacks to its line (one of them a collaboration with Animal Planet channel star Jackson Galaxy), as well as releasing a travel litterbox for cats.

As detailed in Meet the Pet People (see Plus-One Parents), pets have become humanised family members who increasingly live similar on-the-go lifestyles to their owners.
