Beating Bacteria: Odour-Eliminating Sheets
Australian start-up Ettitude has developed a range of high-performance bedding infused with coffee grounds – eliminating odour and wicking away moisture that can lead to bacteria growth.
The sheets are created by weaving a coffee-infused yarn with a bamboo Lyocell yarn to create a naturally breathable, thermo-regulating and antimicrobial fabric with the softness of a high-thread-count cotton. The in-built functionality means the bedding doesn’t have to be washed as frequently, saving time, water and energy.
The material has a sponge-like structure, which means it has a larger surface area than conventional fabrics, enabling it to dry quicker as moisture is more widely dispersed. In fact, Ettitude claims that the sheets dry 50% faster and absorb odour three times faster than traditional cotton bedding, making them particularly suitable for people living in hotter climates.
As well as saving water and energy, the material itself is more sustainable than cotton. Bamboo is often proffered as a more environmentally friendly option due to its fast-growing properties, while Lyocell is made using a closed-loop process. Ettitude also prides itself on reusing substances throughout the production process where possible – from the solvents used in textile manufacturing, to the coffee grounds themselves, which are collected from local coffee shops.
