The Charles Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts, rewards its customers on how "green" their mode of transport is. Drivers of electric and hybrid cars are offered free parking in the hotel's garage and a special area is reserved for guests driving smaller vehicles such Smart Cars and Mini Coopers.
The garage uses a NanoMax detection service, which measures the size of each vehicle and adjusts the parking rate accordingly. Environmentally friendly vehicles are assigned discounted rates.
Guests can also top up the air in their tyres at the inflation station for maximum fuel efficiency and there is also a free bicycle-lending service.
These efforts have earned the hotel the 2009 Good Earthkeeping Award from the Massachusetts Lodging Association.
