OmniFoods Launches World’s First Vegan Luncheon Meat
As discussed in Veganism’s Post-Pandemic Future, the appetite for vegan alternatives in China is booming. Catering to this demand, Hong Kong-based faux-meat brand OmniFoods has launched the world’s first vegan luncheon meat, offering an alternative to Spam – 400 million cans of which were sold in the Asia-Pacific region in 2019 (Global Info Research, 2020).
Omnipork Luncheon is made from a combination of soy, wheat, beetroot and coconut oil, and contains 40% fewer calories, 49% less fat and 62% less sodium than regular luncheon meat. The brand has also launched Omnistrips – an alternative to pork shoulder.
Both products were specifically created with Asian culinary applications in mind, including dumplings and dim sum. This reflects thinking covered in Alt-Meat Achieves Global Success, which highlights the exciting opportunity for faux-meat brands to develop products that speak to regional tastes and cuisines.
It also highlights a new direction for the development of mock meat – which has been moving towards creating items that imitate the real deal, as opposed to creating alternatives of popular processed meats such as burgers and sausages.
Demand for pork alternatives in China first began to grow in 2019, after the outbreak of Swine Flu disrupted the meat industry.
