Pantone Crowns Classic Blue Colour of the Year 2020

Pantone Colour of the Year 2020: Classic Blue

Global colour system manufacturer Pantone has announced its forecast Colour of the Year 2020 as Classic Blue (TCX 19-4052). The timeless, elegant shade is cited as a reassuring but confident hue, that highlights “our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era”.

Last year, the company selected Living Coral – a vibrant yet mellow coral hue that represented comfort and buoyancy (see The Brief). This warm and nourishing hue is now replaced by Classic Blue, described by Pantone as a restful and reflective colour that “brings a sense of peace and tranquillity to the human spirit”. It’s suggestive of the sky at dusk and intended to instil a sense of calm, confidence and connection.

“We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute. “Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenges us to think more deeply, increase our perspective, and open the flow of communication.”

It’s the combination of honesty, clarity and reflection conjured up in Classic Blue that makes this choice so relevant for 2020. We expect to see this highly commercial colour applied across industries, particularly in beauty, fashion, homeware and packaging.

We also include a similar classic blue shade, Indigo Ink, in our S/S 20 Colour Direction Hands of Time; while our A/W 20/21 Colour & Materials Direction Solace explores themes of inner balance, clarity and contemplation.
