Pantone x Kia: Car Interior Mood Lighting

Pantone x Kia: K900 mood lighting system

Korean carmaker Kia has collaborated with global colour institute Pantone on its latest K900 luxury sedan model to develop a coloured mood-lighting system that enhances the driving experience.

Pantone created a palette of seven nature-inspired ambient hues for the car (which offers 64 lighting options in total). Colours such as blue, green, orange and purple, taken from natural environments like the ocean, forest and sun, were all designed to put the driver at ease.

The lighting features throughout the cabin in the door panels, footwells and trim details, illuminating the vehicle with a soft, coloured glow. See Directional LEDs in CMF Industry View: Automotive Update for more on illuminated cabin details.

The mood lighting combines with the car’s minimal interior layout and sophisticated materials such as matt wood trims and soft leathers to create a peaceful retreat.

“We knew Kia wanted the K900 to be something more than a mere mode of physical transport – more like a space for rest or tranquillity, [to] relax and recharge, even for inspiration,” said Laurie Pressman, vice-president of the Pantone Color Institute.

Passenger wellbeing is starting to influence automotive design, with innovative tech, ambient lighting and crafted interiors offering more human-centric car cabins. See Tech-Filled Concepts in North American International Auto Show 2018 for more.

The K900 was unveiled at the 2018 New York International Auto Show (30 March – 8 April). See Geneva International Motor Show 2018 for our latest automotive coverage.
