Performance Days Preview: S/S 19

Biannual technical textile expo Performance Days continues to cement itself in the active/sportswear calendar, while also attracting new attendees from the broader apparel industry and home textiles sector. At the latest edition in Munich (April 26-27), a curated selection of suppliers showcased next-gen materials with added performance benefits and brand new constructions.

Innovations in biodegradables were of core importance – a direction that feeds directly into the sustainability ethos that has become so integral to the sportswear market. The emphasis was on materials that enable brands to be truly environmentally responsible – such as those that can be remade into new product, or composted at the end of their lifespan.

At each edition of the show, a team of industry specialists curate trend tables presenting the most progressive and relevant materials. This time round, the biodegradable table was the highlight, with an interesting mix of raw texture and refined performance constructions that cross raw-silk drape, lace and dry-handle French terry cloth. Texture and comfort are the drivers for S/S 19, addressing "rest and recovery" post- and pre-performance, as well as sustainability.

With an impressive range of speakers including London-based fashion designer Christopher Raeburn, this show continues to demonstrate its ability to attract high-performance sportswear icons as well as brands entering the athleisure market. Look out for the full report on Stylus, coming soon.
