The Return of Luxury Rail
Premium train journeys are re-emerging as the pinnacle of luxury travel, with several new uber-luxurious rail experiences launching in 2017. Here are three of the best.
- Supercar Design: East Japan Railway Company has created the Train Suite Shiki-Shima in collaboration with Japanese car specialist Ken Okuyama, former chief designer at Porsche and creator of the Ferrari Enzo. The premium sleeper train transports 35 passengers per journey across the east coast of Japan. It features spacious two-storey sleeper suites (including private bath tub), a fine-dining restaurant, and two glass observatory cars for optimum views of the landscape. Launching in May 2017, trips start from $2,769 for two nights.
- Rail Experiences: Also making its maiden voyage in Japan this year (June 2017), the Twilight Express Mizukaze is a luxury sleeper train that will traverse the western part of the country, stopping at galleries and botanical gardens that aren't normally open to the public. This experience is about insider access as much as it is about fine dining and impeccable service. One-night trips start from $2,441 per person.
- Massage On the Move: Scottish luxury sleeper train the Belmond Royal Scotsman has added the world's first 'spa car' to its offering. The Bamford Haybarn Spa offers treatments inspired by the natural scenery of the Scottish Highlands, using natural botanical ingredients. Options include facials and deep-tissue massages. Prices start from £2,330 ($2,897) per person for two nights (excluding spa treatments). See also Wandering Wellness and New Luxury Travel.
