Airless Tyre Design

Colorado-based company Britek Tire and Rubber has developed the Energy Return Wheel – an airless tyre that functions without an interior air tube, eliminating the risk of flat tyres and potentially increasing fuel efficiency if used on larger vehicles.

Instead of air, the wheel uses rubber stretched over a series of carbon nanotube composite rods to provide cushioning. The rods can be adjusted, which changes the tension of the rubber to suit different types of terrain.

The design is presently being prototyped for mountain bikes and is awaiting patent approvals in the US.
