A Better Backpack: the Lifelong Bag

A new project launched on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter called A Better Backpack is proposing the production of a timeless backpack that will last more than a lifetime.

A Better Backpack is the brainchild of creative director and digital designer Daniel Eckler. Based in Amsterdam, Eckler is proposing an alternative to the throwaway fashion culture of today with a clean, minimal backpack that is built to last and will never go out of style. Made from 100% cotton canvas with hardwearing waterproof lining, the bag is simply designed with no obviously ‘on trend’ details that might date it.

The project was launched on Kickstarter on November 12 and has so far more than doubled its funding goal of $20,000, with another 22 days still to go. Sustainability is at its core: customers are encouraged to pass the bag on to family or friends once they no longer have any use for it, or they can return it for a 10% refund, and the bag will be reappropriated for someone else.

So far, the bag comes in three colours – brown, navy and stone – with more promised depending on the funds raised on Kickstarter. See Honestby and Patagonia’s Worn Wear campaign for more examples of brands encouraging ‘slow shopping’.
