Quorn Introduces Carbon-Footprint Labelling


UK plant-based protein brand Quorn will help consumers understand the environmental impact of their eating habits, by becoming the first major food brand to detail the carbon footprint of its products on-pack.

As of June 2020, the packaging of its top 30 best-selling products will include ‘Farm to Shop’ carbon-footprint data, as certified by UK sustainability-standards body The Carbon Trust. The label will denote how much carbon has been produced per kilogram of product, for example its popular mince plant-based mince takes 1.3kg CO2 per kilogram.

This on-pack messaging is a clear and powerful tool to help the increasingly eco-aware grocery shopper make more sustainable buying choices (read Veganism’s Next Leap Forward and How Soil Will Save the World for more on how to better communicate eco-values).

It is also a savvy commercial move – according to a 2019 global study by The Carbon Trust, two-thirds of consumers support recognisable carbon labelling on-pack, and 66% said they would feel more positive about brands that communicate and demonstrate their carbon-reduction efforts. 

Peter Harrison, chief commercial officer of Quorn, said: “This is about giving people the information needed to make informed decisions about the food they eat and the effect it has on our planet’s climate – in the same way that nutrition information is clearly labelled to help inform decisions on health.”
