Alcohol App Flaviar ‘Visualises’ Taste

Billed as "the closest you'll get to tasting a whisky before buying it", Flaviar is a free app that presents users with visual depictions of the flavours associated with particular alcoholic drinks.

Available on all Apple products with iOS 7 or above, the app displays visuals of the flavour profiles that make up a particular beverage, known as a flavour spiral. Each flavour spiral comprises a selection of 252 flavour components.

With a database of around 10,000 different spirits, the app also presents information on distilleries and production methods, tasting notes and reviews and ratings from its 600,000+ users. Drinks can also be purchased directly from the app in tasting packs or full-sized bottles.

"This sort of experience taps into the notion of 'everyday expertise', where complex and intimidating product categories are being made more inclusive to a wider catchment of consumers," says Mandy Saven, head of Food, Beverage & Hospitality at Stylus. "It will be interesting to see how these virtual tasting notes could be applied to other products like coffee and even perfume."
