Long-Life Ready Meals

UK-based packaging supplier KM Packaging has unveiled new film technology that gives ready meals a shelf life of up to 12 months. Available under the company’s Superguard X range, the films are suitable for ambient ready meals containing raw meat, vegetables and sauces and can also be used for frozen products.

The company began research into more resilient packaging materials following a rise in demand for sophisticated ready meals from customers such as airlines, the military and shipping vessels.

As we reported in Global Food & Health Trends 2013-14, food-waste consciousness is on the rise, with 39% of Americans feeling guilty about trashing food. With typical pre-prepared meals only lasting up to eight weeks, KM Packaging’s new film could help to significantly minimise product waste.

The extended shelf life could also open new doors for ready meals in the burgeoning survivalist living market. Read more in Packaging to Survive Modern Life.
