Balenciaga’s creative director Demna Gvasalia has sparked an online frenzy of Ikea bag-inspired products after launching a doppelgänger of the Swedish furniture giant’s iconic blue Frakta tote. Priced at $2,145 (compared with Ikea’s 99 cents), the bag went viral, with even Ikea getting in on the act by releasing instructions on how to spot a fake Frakta.
With the fashion world currently enjoying a love affair with blurring the lines between counterfeit and real products, DIY designers globally have spotted an opportunity to capitalise on this by making and selling their own Ikea bag creations. Examples of bootleg apparel include bucket hats and wallets from London-based brand and Instagram favourite ALCH, caps from New York e-commerce brand Chinatown Market and even hoodies and track pants from LA-based Norwood Chapters.
