Wolff Olins: Christmas Calm

Sam by Wolff Olins

Global brand consultancy Wolff Olins has created Sam: a series of sideways audio moments designed to help people snatch a few moments of quiet reflection over the festive season.

The web-based creation provides three minutes of audio distraction for consumers to tune out to. To create Sam, Wolff Olins asked employees to record the soundscapes of their favourite places for "unthinking" – a place to clear their heads and gain fresh perspective.

The short soundscapes are taken from sites all over the world, from Trafalgar Square in London to the streets of San Francisco. "Simply plug in your headphones and let Sam teleport you to another moment," says Wolff Olins.

Encouraging a stripped-back, contemplative Christmas is becoming something of a tradition for Wolff Olins. Last year the consultancy developed Higby, a series of smartphone accessories to encourage people to have a phone-free festive period.

Consumers are increasingly searching for quick ways to inject a sense of calm into their hectic lifestyles. Products such as Thync, a mood-modifying wearable, offer a tech-based solution, while Breather, a Montreal-based start-up, provides a network of private "breathing spaces" for stressed urban citizens in need of a time-out.
