S/S 18 Catwalks: Retro Hair Styling

Retro hairstyles from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s made an impact on the S/S 18 catwalks, offering inspiration for consumers and salon stylists, as well as fashion editorial and advertising campaigns.
- Sleek 60s: London-based Ryan Lo’s show featured models in doll-like, ribbon-tied hairstyles. British hair maestro Sam McKnight called the look ‘princess hair’, securing perfectly coiffed half-up, half-down locks with white bows and Modern Hairspray from his eponymous product range – see Beauty Forecast S/S 19.
Over in Paris, the models at Guy Laroche wore platinum blonde bowl-cut wigs in homage to late French New Wave-era actress Mireille Darc. Meanwhile, Indian model of the moment Dipti Sharma and her glossy black bowl-cut hair opened and closed this season’s Balenciaga show – see S/S 18 Influencer Show: Balenciaga.
- 70s & 80s Disco Glam: Gucci’s typically eclectic show referenced the 70s and 80s, with extreme Farah Fawcett-like flicks by British hairstylist Paul Hanlon providing high-octane glamour – see S/S 18 Influencer Show: Gucci. At Alice + Olivia, designer Stacey Bendet’s show was inspired by New York’s 70s-era landmark Chelsea Hotel, with bohemian soft, tousled waves.
- 90s Pixies: At Moschino, Paul Hanlon was inspired by 90s supermodel Christy Turlington’s famous pixie cut, fitting each model with a close-cropped wig. Meanwhile at Tom Ford, Cuban-born hairstylist Orlando Pita’s faux pixie crops boasted sweeping, over-the-eye fringes, while Italian stylist Roberta Bellazzi’s choppy fringed black wigs had a more boyish vibe at Giorgio Armani.
