LFW S/S 13: Jonathan Saunders

Extra

London Fashion Week kicked off last Friday (September 14 2012) with several highlights already emerging, including London-based Jonathan Saunders who rounded off the weekend with his show at the Tate Modern.

Known for his prints and knitwear, Saunders looked to new fabrications for Spring/Summer 2013 – namely sequins, holographic silver and glossy leather for a disco-inspired collection. There was an element of duality to the collection, with numerous looks offering different colours from the front and back, and bold stripes in contrasting colours and materials.

Seventies hedonists are at the heart of the collection, with a sense of wild-child bohemia achieved through exposed midriffs and sheer bras teamed with jewel-toned suiting. Retro goggle-shaped eyewear by London-based brand Cutler & Gross conjured thoughts of pool parties in Palm Springs, while glossy Merlot lips and dark, kohl-rimmed eyes retained a sense of uptown debauchery.

The oversized bomber jackets kept the aesthetic cool and distinctly London through their sporty connotations, while curved stripes and teardrop prints and paillettes firmly reiterated what US brand Marc Jacobs told us in New York: the Sixties and Seventies look set to be key directions for S/S 13.

London Fashion Week concludes tomorrow, with Milan Fashion Week commencing on Wednesday.
