Supergoop & StyleDry Develop New Sun Protectants

New suncare launches offer consumers seamless ways to incorporate SPF into their daily routines. We highlight two brands that are making strides in this category, boosting make-up and haircare products with UV filters.

The global suncare market is forecast to be worth $24.9bn by 2024 (Transparency Market Research, 2018) and product developers are exploring new ways to formulate with SPF. Recent launches are fusing advanced UV filters into easy-to-use products that protect vulnerable areas of the skin and hair.

  • Supergoop: US sun protection pioneer Supergoop is bridging the gap between suncare and make-up with the launch of a highly pigmented SPF 30 cream eyeshadow. Launched in March 2019, the Shimmershade Eyeshadows are available in four warm neutral tones – ranging from chocolate brown to peachy bronze.

The long-lasting formula contains broad-spectrum sun protection with clean chemical and mineral UV filters, such as zinc oxide and octisalate. Meanwhile, antioxidant-rich ingredients including rose, jasmine and chamomile aim to soothe and hydrate the eye area.

Supergoop is the first brand to launch an eye make-up product containing SPF and is filling a key gap in the market, since the eye area is sensitive to conventional sun creams. In an interview with WWD, Supergoop’s founder Holly Thaggard, said: “The eyes are particularly vulnerable to sun damage […] our skin is so much thinner and that makes it much more vulnerable to skin cancer and signs of ageing.”
  • StyleDry: In April 2019, Dutch brand StyleDry launched an on-the-go haircare product with a UV protector. The Dry Shampoo Compact Powder aims to remove the appearance of greasy roots in a single swipe.

StyleDry claims the vitamin E compound (tocopheryl acetate) is able to protect the scalp from harmful UV rays due to its enhanced SPF properties. This soothing ingredient also prevents the scalp from flaking and peeling after sun exposure.
