Westpac Banks Go Local

Sydney architects Landini Associates have begun rebranding and designing Westpac bank branches across Australia as part of a cultural change to bring the bank back to a local level.

With a focus on locality and community, the designers have created three different material concepts (one for urban areas, one for suburban sites and one for rural branches), which have then been further developed to reflect individual locations.

The first redesigned branch to open is in central Sydney, and features a neutral palette accented by red signage. A casual chalkboard behind the main desk, introducing a distinctly playful aesthetic, references leisurely activities such as drinking coffee in a local café. There are also colourful signs introducing bank staff, creating what Michael Landini, creative director of Landini Associates, describes as a “more real, more human” environment.
