NYFW A/W 13-14: Alexander Wang

As the newly appointed creative director of Parisian fashion label Balenciaga, all eyes were on American designer Alexander Wang this weekend at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week (NYFW).

Texture defined Wang’s Autumn/Winter 2013-14 offering, with leather, fur, silk and shimmering mohair layered together for a glamorous take on seasonally appropriate outerwear. Wang’s signature sportswear influences came through elbow-length fur boxing gloves, while the edgy elegance of 70s-inspired plunging silk suits and shawl collars and crossover draping harked back to a bygone era of glamour.

Devoid of colour save for the models’ copper ponytails, the collection relied on a few instances of oily iridescence to add interest to the predominantly grey collection. Tabard-style tops and drop waists on coats and dresses made for an androgynous, vintage silhouette, topped off with black balaclava-style hats, which Wang used to open the show.

In a few weeks, Wang will be in Paris to showcase his debut collection at the helm of Balenciaga. NYFW continues until Thursday February 14 2013.
