The Standard Creates App To Forge Guest Connections

The Standard

To stand out in the Airbnb-infused hospitality landscape, hotels are having to work hard to highlight the benefits of booking a hotel room over a home rental. US boutique hotel chain The Standard has highlighted the social aspect of its properties by launching a new app that brings guests together.

The app, called Lobby, offers checked-in guests the opportunity to interact with other guests in a social-network-style setting, allowing them to chat, send images and gifs and even arrange to meet in real life. Guests can reveal as much or as little about their real identities as they are comfortable with. All interactions are deleted on checkout, leaving no digital trail.

The app aims to connect people to other guests – inspired by how they may have done in the hotel lobby space in the past.

"We understand that people often become a different version of themselves when they travel, especially when they stay in hotels," said Jimmy Suh, Standard International's chief commercial officer. "They become more adventurous, more spontaneous, and more curious. This app is meant to bridge that spontaneity. Beautiful things can happen when two strangers come together and have a great time."

This is a great example of how travel can become a more socially inclusive experience, bringing people together and building connections – as discussed in our Macro Trend Report Hospitality's Bonding Power. For more on inspired hotel tech, read Tech-Forward Hotels.
