With more spending being made online, the need for more flexible fulfilment options (both delivery and collection) has never been higher. We highlight the latest wave of innovative services emerging – predominantly spearheaded by supermarkets catering to commuting consumers.

  • In December 2013, UK supermarket Asda piloted a click-&-collect scheme that allowed shoppers to pick up their orders from branded delivery vans in car parks of busy London Underground stations (see our Subway Shopping blog post for more).
  • UK supermarket Tesco announced that it would be following Asda in this move – using delivery vans as pick-up points at six London Underground stations. 
  • At this year’s Mobile World Congress trade show, Swedish car manufacturer Volvo unveiled an in-car system concept that allows couriers to find and access participants cars to drop deliveries directly into the boot. The concept would provide delivery companies with a digital key that will be activated when the order is placed and deactivated as soon as the car is locked. Shoppers can track the delivery via a real-time smartphone app. For those doubting its appeal on security grounds, during a trial in late 2013, it gained a 92% approval rating.

As part of its plans to upgrade the Underground network, Transport for London is currently reducing the number of ticket halls in stations – leaving a new pocket of small-format space ideal for retail occupation, including click-&-collect hubs.

  • UK supermarket Waitrose is first out of the blocks with plans to install temperature-controlled lockers at London Underground stations across 2014. The move follows a successful trial of the same technology at its Bracknell store last year. Customers are sent the locker number and a unique pin number to access their order.
