My Bike Chandelier by Tom Dixon

Inspired by the efficiency of a standard bicycle wheel, London-based designer Tom Dixon has created a giant wheel chandelier – comprised of 72 oversized, energy efficient bulbs – for Paris concept store, Merci.

Titled My Bike, the 3m-wide custom frame features lacing electrical cables that represent the wheel spokes, which meet in the middle to form the hub. Running around the edge of the wheel are the oversized lights – Dixon’s unique Bulb design. The energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs can be used without a shade on almost any light fitting.

The installation is tilted, allowing it to be viewed from both floors, and it cascades a shadow across the space as the light hits the bike spokes from the window above. Currently suspended in Merci’s atrium – to coincide with the store’s current seasonal theme, ‘Velo’ – the installation will be on show until February 18 2012.
