Adult Playgrounds in New York

Active playgrounds for adults, not kids, are taking the United States by storm with 30 of them already in use in Los Angeles and 24 due to be built in New York within the next 18 months, according to the The New York Times.

Adult playgrounds are appealing to members of the public who want to get fit on a budget. Designed in the style of a traditional playground, the sites include adult-sized monkey bars, chin-up bars and metal racks for sit-ups. Colours such as beige and forest green have been incorporated into the designs to evoke a mature theme.

The concept for these active outdoor spaces originated in China and parts of Europe, but as they have gained popularity the number of sites appears to be growing rapidly in the US. New York is currently testing out is first grown-up playground in Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx.

Gym spaces are evolving as consumers are looking for more personalised workout areas. Read more about this in the Stylus report David Barton and The Gym Revolution.
